Origin and Authorship of Manusmriti

The exact date and authorship of Manusmriti are not known for sure. According to Hindu tradition, Manusmriti was composed by Swayambhuva Manu, the first of the 14 Manus or progenitors of mankind. He is said to be the son of Brahma, the creator god. Some sources suggest that Manu was born around 9500 BC, making Manusmriti about 10,000 years old.
